I will give two “talks” recently. More accurately, I’m going to share my research and thoughts on making life decisions with some younger folks. Both talks are internal, only available for students in the corresponding schools.

Doing fieldwork in China: Beijing & Shenzhen

I’m heading back to China in early August to conduct some fieldwork. I will be going to Beijing first, staying from mid-August until late September, and then getting back to Shenzhen. This fieldwork will last for 4 months so I won’t be back to the U.S. until in December. If you will also be in Beijing/Shenzhen, let me know. Got the Graduate Certificate in Science, Technology and Society

Upon my completion of the Social Justice and Design class this Spring, I have gotten the Graduate Certificate in Science, Technology and Society (STS). Since 2016, I have taken four classes in total to get this certificate. It has been such a wonderful journey full of challenges. Now is the time to do something with STS!
Will intern at Facebook this summer

I haven’t updated this page for awhile, so maybe now is a good time to put some new information up. I’m going to intern at Facebook (Menlo Park) this summer from May to August. Passed qualification exam!

Passed PhD qualification exam today! Finished the written part a month ago and took the oral exam today. Yay!

My paper Navigating Media Use: Chinese Parents and Their Overseas Adolescent Children on WeChat is accepted by the 2017 ACM conference on Designing Interactive Systems. I thank my co-authors Zhonghe Wen and Muchao Tang, who are both awesome HCI master students at Georgia Tech, as well as Dr. Betsy DiSalvo, who has offered so much support.

My first paper, Goodbye Text, Hello Emoji: Mobile Communication on WeChat in China, is accepted by the 2017 ACM CHI conference on Human Factors in Computing Systems. I will present this paper in Denver this May. I have co-authored another paper, Rice Today, Roti Tomorrow: Diets and Diabetes in Urban Indian Households, and it will be presented by my awesome colleague and friend Jasmine Hentschel. Hope to see you there!
As a fellow for GaTech SLS FEWS program

I was recently nominated by my advisor Prof. Neha Kumar as a fellow for Georgia Tech’s Center for Serve-Learn-Sustain Food, Energy, Water Systems (FEWS) program, and I was formally accepted yesterday (yeah!). I will be granted $1,000 and attending 6 workshops during the second half of this year, to work on projects relevant to FEWS and sustainability. Very excited and cannot wait to meet and collaborate with new people and learn more knowledge!
Idea track runner-up and best poster in Ideas to Serve competition

Our team Eating Right, including Samyukta Sherugar (a first-year Master student in HCI), Tanisha Wagh (a second-year Master student in HCI), Jasmine Hentschel (a design researcher at THRIVE), and myself, won both the Ideas Track Runner Up and Best Poster in 2016 Ideas to Serve (I2S) Competition held by Scheller College of Business at Georgia Tech! Together these two awards worth $2,500! What an encouragement for all of us. 🙂 Special thank to our mentor and advisor Prof. Neha Kumar, who supported us all the way along.
Accepted to attend CRA-Women Grad Cohort workshop

First workshop proposal accepted

My proposal Agricultural Knowledge Management in Rural China: Learning from Existing Approaches in India was just accepted by Development Consortium under CHI 2016. This proposal was a collaboration with Jasmine Hentschel from University of Michigan and Dr. Neha Kumar, my advisor at Georgia Institute of Technology. This was my first workshop proposal so I was thrilled because of its acceptance! Will be flying to San Jose in May. 😀
